FAQ

Questions, answered straight

Practical answers about Subaru servicing, engine builds, parts and visiting our Southport workshop.

01Do you only work on Subarus?

Yes. SPR Performance is a Subaru specialist workshop, covering Impreza, WRX, STI, Forester, Liberty and BRZ, from scheduled servicing through to complete engine builds.

02What does CNC close decking cost?

CNC close decking is listed at $1,100 for EJ20 and EJ25 engine case halves. Confirm current pricing with the workshop. It can be done on EJ205, EJ207, EJ255 and EJ257 cases, with the coolant passages cut to suit the head gasket type your build requires. Customers can supply their own case halves, or SPR can supply them subject to stock for an additional charge.

03Why does close decking matter?

Close decking adds support around the upper cylinder walls of an open deck EJ block. It can form part of an engine build for increased cylinder pressures, but reliability also depends on the condition of the engine, the complete parts package and tuning. Ask SPR whether it is appropriate for your build.

04Can you supply a new Subaru short block?

SPR list new EJ207 and EJ257 short block assemblies with pistons and rods fitted by Subaru Japan. A short block is not a complete engine: cylinder heads and other components are needed to complete the assembly. Contact the workshop with your model, engine and VIN to confirm compatibility, availability and the parts required for your repair.

05Why do you replace the oil cooler after a bearing failure?

SPR strongly recommend replacing the engine oil cooler after any bearing failure. An old cooler can retain bearing debris that could contaminate the replacement engine. The workshop can advise on the oil system checks and replacement parts needed for your repair.

06Do I need a 10mm or an 11mm oil pump?

SPR list 10mm and 11mm oil pumps for different turbo EJ applications. The right pump depends on the exact engine and build specification; a larger pump is not automatically the right choice. Send the workshop your model, engine and VIN to confirm fitment, especially after an engine failure.

07Can I buy parts online?

Parts are listed on this site with SPR’s prices, but they are listed for enquiry rather than online checkout. Send the part you need along with your model, engine and VIN and SPR will confirm fitment before anything is ordered.

08Do you work on older Imprezas?

Yes. SPR hold parts for GC8-era cars including tie rods and steering rack ends for 97-00 and 00-05 Impreza, WRX and STI, and for 98-02 and 03-07 Forester, subject to stock and confirmed fitment.

09Will you give advice if the work is not done at SPR?

Yes. Contact SPR with questions about your next modification, repair or build. Include your model and engine, what you want to achieve and any work already carried out.

10Do you do air conditioning regas?

Yes. SPR offer air conditioning servicing and regas. If your air conditioning is no longer cooling properly, describe the symptoms when you book so the workshop can advise on the checks required. Call 0422 051 559.

11Can I book a log book service?

Yes. Contact SPR with your Subaru model, year and current kilometres to arrange scheduled servicing. Bring your service book and discuss any warranty or service-plan requirements with the workshop when booking.

12Where are you and what are your hours?

SPR Performance is at 1/46 Olympic Circuit, Southport QLD 4215, on the Gold Coast. The workshop is open Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 4pm, and closed Saturday and Sunday. Call 0422 051 559.
